Thieves' Highway

Nick Garcos returns to San Francisco after serving in World War II, expecting to settle down with his girlfriend, Polly Faber. Instead he finds that his father, a fruit seller, has been badly hurt and robbed in a dispute tied to Mike Figlia, a crooked produce dealer with mob connections. Nick goes to work hauling fruit to Figlia's market, determined to settle the score. He finds an unexpected ally in Rica, a woman working the market district, and as he pushes against Figlia's operation he is drawn deeper into the rackets and corruption surrounding it.

Jules Dassin directed this crime drama, the third of the eight films listed for him and one made between The Naked City and Night and the City. A.I. Bezzerides wrote the screenplay, and Robert Bassler produced it for 20th Century Fox. Richard Conte leads as Nick, with Valentina Cortese as Rica, Lee J. Cobb as Figlia, Barbara Lawrence as Polly, Jack Oakie and Millard Mitchell in support, across a credited cast of 37.

Released in September 1949 and running 94 minutes, the film holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 7,500 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from a much smaller tally of 118. Critics' reviews give it 8.3 from 11, higher than either audience measure, suggesting a strong reputation among reviewers relative to its modest wider following.
