Lorenzo's Oil

Lorenzo's Oil tells the story of Augusto and Michaela Odone, whose young son Lorenzo is diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare and degenerative neurological disease with no known cure. As the boy loses his ability to walk, see and speak, the couple refuse to accept the prognosis. Though neither has any medical training, they teach themselves genetics, biology and neurology, and press doctors, researchers and support organisations for answers. Their search leads them toward an unconventional treatment of their own devising, straining their marriage and their finances along the way.

George Miller directed and co-wrote the film with Nick Enright, and produced it with Doug Mitchell. It was released in December 1992 and runs 135 minutes.

Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon play the parents, with Peter Ustinov as Professor Nikolais and Ann Hearn, Maduka Steady and Aaron Jackson among the credited cast of 35.

It was Miller's sixth film as director of 13, arriving between The Witches of Eastwick and Babe: Pig in the City. Made for about 30 million USD, it grossed roughly 7 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from 23,722 votes, and on TMDB 7.1/10 from 585 votes, close to the critics' rating of 7.1/10.
