Short description
Lloyd Dobler is a high school student with no clear plans for the future and an unlikely goal: winning over Diane Court, the brilliant and admired class valedictorian. To nearly everyone's surprise, she responds to him, and the two begin a relationship. The obstacle is Diane's father, a divorced man who is closely involved in his daughter's life and has his own expectations for her, including study abroad. His disapproval puts pressure on the couple, and Lloyd finds that affection alone may not be enough to hold the relationship together.
Cameron Crowe wrote and directed the film, which was released in 1989 and stands as the first feature he directed in a run that continued with Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, Elizabethtown, We Bought a Zoo and Aloha. John Cusack plays Lloyd, with Ione Skye as Diane and John Mahoney as her father; Lili Taylor, Amy Brooks and Pamela Adlon also appear. Polly Platt and Paul Germain produced for 20th Century Fox and Gracie Films.
Made for about 16 million dollars, the film took in roughly 22 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from around 101,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7 from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 50 reviews places it above those audience scores.

- Initially, Lawrence Kasdan was credited as the director of the film, but he left the project.
- In one episode, Lloyd (John Cusack) drives past a cinema showing the film 'The Coil' (1987), in which Cusack also starred.
- Robert Downey Jr. turned down the lead role, and it almost went to Kirk Cameron. Christian Slater also auditioned for it.
- In addition to Ioan Gruffudd for the role of Diane Court, Jennifer Connelly was also considered.
- According to producer James L. Brooks, the idea for the film came to him on the street when he saw a man walking with his daughter. Brooks then had the thought: what would happen if a father committed a crime?
- Director Cameron Crowe couldn't find a suitable love song for his film until he heard Peter Gabriel's “In Your Eyes.” In response to a request to allow the use of the song in the film, Gabriel asked to be sent a rough cut of the future film. After watching it, the singer agreed to provide the song because he liked the film. He only lamented that the main character of the film dies in the finale from a drug overdose. Only then did Crowe realize that Gabriel had mistakenly been sent a copy of the biographical film about John Belushi, “Wired” (1989).
