Savior
Short description
Savior is a 1998 war drama set against the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. An American named Joshua Rose suffers a devastating personal loss and, driven by grief and a desire for revenge, he joins the French Foreign Legion before becoming a mercenary fighting with Serb forces in Bosnia. Numbed by the brutality around him, he gradually begins to recover a sense of compassion, particularly through his involvement with a pregnant Serbian woman named Vera and the child she carries.
The film was directed by Predrag Antonijević, whose other credits include The Little One, Hard Cash and Dara of Jasenovac. Robert Orr wrote the screenplay, and Janet Yang and Oliver Stone produced. Dennis Quaid leads the cast as Joshua Rose, with Stellan Skarsgård as Peter, Nataša Ninković as Vera, Pascal Rollin as a Paris priest and Catlin Foster as Christian. Made for a budget of about 10 million dollars, the film runs 103 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from roughly 12,000 votes, and on TMDB it has a rating of 7.1 from around 193 votes. A smaller group of critics gave it an average of 6.4 from ten reviews, lower than the scores audiences have given it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Footage of the murder of peaceful Serbs in the final scene was used in the film "Behind Enemy Lines." The difference was that in the 2001 American action film, the killing was presented to the audience as Serbs killing Muslims.
- The events depicted in the film took place during the Croatian-Bosnian conflict in the autonomous region of Herzeg-Bosnia in 1993.
- The scene of the landing in Africa was borrowed from Wolfgang Petersen's (1941-2022) thriller "Outbreak" (1995), as the film's creators did not have enough budget to film a similar scene.
