Unforgettable centres on David Krane, a Seattle medical examiner whose wife was murdered and who was found near the scene while heavily drunk. He was cleared of the killing but lost custody of his children, and the case still drives him. After encountering the neurobiologist Martha Briggs, who is developing a serum that can move memories from one person to another, Krane takes part in her experiments in the hope of seeing what his wife saw before she died. The procedure carries serious risks.
John Dahl directed the film, which followed The Last Seduction in his run of features and was written by Bill Geddie. Ray Liotta plays Krane, with Linda Fiorentino as Briggs, Peter Coyote as Don Bresler, Christopher McDonald as Stewart Gleick, and David Paymer as Curtis Avery. It was produced by Dino De Laurentiis and Martha De Laurentiis for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with an $18 million budget.
Released in February 1996, the film runs 116 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from about 123 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 30 reviews places it below the audience scores on IMDb and above the much smaller TMDB sample.
