The Gift

Annie Wilson is a young widow raising three children in a small Georgia town. She supports her family by reading cards for her neighbours, and some in the community treat her gift with suspicion. When Jessica King, the fiancée of the local school principal, disappears, Annie experiences visions of what happened to her. She helps direct the police to the body, and the man arrested is Donnie Barksdale, a violent local with whom Annie has already clashed. As suspicion shifts and hostility toward Annie grows, she becomes less certain that the right person has been blamed.

The film was directed by Sam Raimi, the ninth of the seventeen features he has directed in chronological order, following For Love of the Game and preceding Spider-Man. Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson wrote the screenplay, and Cate Blanchett plays Annie. The cast includes Giovanni Ribisi, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear and Hilary Swank.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took in roughly 12 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 81,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.5 from a much smaller pool of voters, and its critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10. The audience scores and the critics' score sit close together, indicating a generally moderate reception rather than a sharply divided one.
