I, Robot
Short description
I, Robot is set in Chicago in 2035, where robots have become everyday household helpers, running errands and performing routine chores under programming rules designed to keep humans safe. Detective Del Spooner distrusts them, and when he investigates the death of Dr. Alfred Lanning, a robotics researcher, the main suspect appears to be an android named Sonny. Because robots are supposedly incapable of harming people, the case points to something that should be impossible, and Spooner's inquiry, aided by robot psychologist Dr. Susan Calvin, suggests a threat that reaches beyond a single death.
Alex Proyas directed the film, his fourth feature after The Crow, Dark City and Garage Days, working from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Vintar. Will Smith plays Spooner, with Bridget Moynahan as Calvin, Alan Tudyk as the voice of Sonny, James Cromwell as Lanning and Bruce Greenwood as Lawrence Robertson. The film was produced by John Davis, Wyck Godfrey and Laurence Mark, and cost about 120 million dollars, going on to earn roughly 347 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response has been favorable but not unanimous: it holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from around 612,000 votes and a 7 on TMDB from about 13,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.2 from 223 reviews places critical opinion somewhat below the audience scores. It runs 115 minutes and was made as a co-production between the United States, Canada and Germany.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one of the windows of a shop selling antiques, viewers can see the famous robot dog AIBO.
- The film features one of Audi’s latest developments – a luxurious Audi Le Mans Quattro. Although initially this car was made specifically for the film, the company’s bosses liked the new model so much that they decided to launch it into serial production.
- When the project was launched in 1998, Brian Singer was listed as the director.
- The film is based on Isaac Asimov’s collection of short stories “I, Robot” (1950).
- The robot Sonny was played by Alan Tudyk using Motion Capture technology, the same technology used to create Gollum in Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings'. Gollum and Sonny are among the first computer characters in films fully played by actors using Motion Capture.
- Marco Beltrami was invited to participate in the project at the very last stage of its development, and was given only 17 days to write approximately 90 minutes of musical score for the film.
- A concept car, the Audi RSQ, was specifically developed for the film and played the role of Spooner's vehicle in 2035.
- The film is based on all nine stories in Isaac Asimov’s collection “I, Robot.” The collection has a sequel in the form of four novels: “The Caves of Steel,” “The Naked Sun,” “The Robots of Dawn,” and “Robots and Empire.”
- Initially, the script had nothing to do with the work of the famous American science fiction author Isaac Asimov (the name this project now bears). However, after the initial script reached the director and the rights to adapt Asimov’s work were purchased, the producers decided to give the existing text to Akiva Goldsman with the request to combine Asimov’s original story with the already developed script 'Hardwired'.
- The film's script was based on a completely different project called “Hardwired.” Despite the project having little chance of being released, composer Jeff Zanelli managed to write the main theme for the film.
