Short description
Open Range follows a group of cattlemen driving their herd across open grassland in the American West of the early 1880s, men who live off the land without owning any of it and keep to themselves to avoid trouble. Their party includes the quiet Charley Waite, the older Boss Spearman, the gentle giant Mose and the young Mexican hand Button. When they pass near the small settlement of Harmonville, they run into the local rancher Denton Baxter, who holds the town under his control through fear and through a sheriff in his pay. Baxter has no tolerance for free grazers on what he considers his range, and the confrontation pushes the cattlemen into a fight they had tried to avoid. A doctor in town, Sue Barlow, becomes a personal stake for Charley as the conflict hardens.
Kevin Costner directed the film and plays Charley, with Robert Duvall as Boss, Annette Bening as Sue, Michael Gambon as Baxter and Diego Luna among the supporting cast. It is Costner's third film as director, after Dances with Wolves and The Postman, from a screenplay by Craig Storper, and it was produced on a budget of about 22 million dollars, going on to take roughly 68 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 84,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2/10 from a much smaller number of ratings. A critics' score of 7/10 across 182 reviews places it close to how audiences have received it.
What's left behind the scenes
- For this film, Kevin Costner turned down an offer to star in Quentin Tarantino's action film "Kill Bill" (2003).
- While training for horseback riding before filming, Robert Duvall fell off a horse and broke 6 ribs.
- Dean McDermott was cast as Doc Barlow because of his limp.
- Charlie's dog, nicknamed Tig, was played by a mixed-breed terrier named Chester. The dog that Charlie saved during the flood was played by two terriers – Goldie and Boomer. Two dogs were used to prevent the animals from getting tired or cold in the water during filming.
- Initially, the heads of Touchstone Pictures approved Kevin Costner for the lead role, but he requested that it be given to Robert Duvall.
- During the flood scene, 32,000 gallons of water were pumped onto the city streets every minute. A tank was installed below the set to collect the water, which was then pumped back up through underground pipes, and the cycle repeated.
- Hunting horses had to be used during the shootout, as they weren't afraid of gunfire.
- Kevin Costner envisioned only Robert Duvall in the role of the Boss. He once admitted that he wouldn't have filmed the movie at all if Duvall had refused to participate.
- None of the existing cities suited Kevin Costner, so they had to build sets for a city that the director would like. This cost $1 million. The city was built so far from populated areas that building a road to it cost $40,000.
- No animals were harmed during the making of the film.
- The Boss's weapon is a Remington Army revolver, model 1875.
- A herd of 225 head of cattle was managed by professional cattlemen.
