Swimfan

Ben Cronin is a popular high school swimmer with a scholarship in his sights, a steady girlfriend named Amy, and a life that seems to be going according to plan. That changes with the arrival of Madison Bell, a new student who takes an interest in him. What begins as a brief encounter turns into something far more serious when Madison refuses to let go, and her fixation starts to disrupt every part of Ben's life, threatening both his relationship and his future in the sport.

Swimfan was released in 2002 and marked the directing debut of John Polson, who went on to make Hide and Seek in 2005 and Tenderness in 2009. Jesse Bradford plays Ben, with Erika Christensen as Madison and Shiri Appleby as Amy. The screenplay is credited to Charles F. Bohl and Phillip Schneider.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took in roughly 34 million worldwide. It drew a 4.1 out of 10 from critics across 91 reviews, while audiences were slightly kinder, giving it 5.1 on IMDb from around 22,000 votes and 5.3 on TMDB from close to 300 votes. The gap is small, but it suggests viewers were a little more tolerant of the film's familiar thriller trappings than reviewers were.
