Short description

Predestination is an Australian science fiction thriller about a Temporal Agent whose job is to travel through time and stop criminals before they can act. On what is meant to be his final assignment, he pursues the one offender who has always escaped him, a case tied to a coming attack with a large death toll. The story unfolds largely through a long conversation in a bar, where a stranger named John tells the bartender an unusual and difficult account of his life, and the bartender makes him an offer connected to the pursuit.

The film was directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, who also wrote and produced it, following their earlier Daybreakers and preceding Jigsaw, Winchester and Fall 2: Deadpoint. Ethan Hawke plays the bartender, with Sarah Snook as the unmarried mother, Noah Taylor as Mr. Robertson and Christopher Kirby as Mr. Miles among a credited cast of 69. Made for about 6 million US dollars, it took in roughly 5 million worldwide, a modest return for a production of that scale. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from more than 7,300 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.8 out of 10 from 112 reviews, with audiences rating it somewhat more favourably than reviewers did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When the protagonist shoots his future self, he uses a six-shooter, yet he fires seven shots.
  • The photograph of the Crosby Shoes building at the beginning of the film is actually a photo of the exploded Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
  • When the main character fills a beer mug in the bar, it is visible that more than half of the glass is filled with foam; however, in the next shot, there is practically no foam.
  • When John Doe first sits down at the mechanical typewriter, a copy of Robert A. Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" is lying next to it.
  • When Ethan Hawke looks at his watch at the beginning of the film (approximately at the eight-minute mark), it displays his actual date of birth.
  • At the beginning of the film, when the bartender takes an oath, he raises his hand, and a brown leather strap is visible on his wrist. In subsequent shots, the strap appears and disappears.
  • During the main character's conversation with the single mother in the bar, it can be noticed that at one point, during a cut, the wooden kegs disappear from the bar counter.
  • The film is based on the short story "All You Zombies..." (1958) by Robert A. Heinlein.
  • During the film, when the bartender pours two glasses of beer, he pours the second glass twice: the first time the foam reaches the rim of the glass, and immediately after a cut, he fills the same glass to the brim again.
