Deep Cover
Short description
Deep Cover follows Russell Stevens Jr., a Los Angeles police officer who is recruited for an undercover assignment targeting the flow of cocaine into the city. Working his way up through the drug trade under the name John Hull, he edges closer to the organization's leadership, which is connected to a Latin American narco-politician. As the operation deepens, his loyalties and his sense of who he is become harder to hold onto.
The film was directed by Bill Duke, the first of four features he directed, ahead of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Hoodlum and Not Easily Broken. Michael Tolkin and Henry Bean wrote the screenplay, and Henry Bean produced alongside Pierre David. Laurence Fishburne plays Stevens, with Jeff Goldblum as the lawyer and dealer David Jason, Victoria Dillard as Betty McCutcheon, Gregory Sierra as Felix Barbosa, Clarence Williams III as Taft and René Assa as Guzman. Around fifty cast members and eighty-three crew were credited.
Released in April 1992, the film runs 108 minutes and falls within the action, crime and thriller genres. Made for about 8 million dollars, it returned roughly 17 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from about 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from around 277 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 31 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The character played by Laurence Fishburne recites poems by the popular rap artist Iceberg Slim. Director Bill Duke is a big fan of Slim and once even wrote a screenplay based on his autobiography titled “Pimp,” although the film was never made.
- The last film in the credits of which Fishburne is listed as Larry, not Laurence.
- The film 'Undercover' was originally conceived as a sequel to Mike Figgis' thriller 'Internal Affairs' (1990), but this idea was later abandoned and a standalone film was made instead.
- The role of the main character was initially offered to Denzel Washington, who declined, then to Wesley Snipes, and only then to Laurence Fishburne.
