X-Men Origins: Wolverine traces the violent early life of Logan, a mutant with a healing factor, heightened senses and bone claws that extend from his hands. Living quietly in the Canadian Rockies after decades of war, he is drawn back into conflict when Victor Creed, the brother whose path has long run alongside his own, kills the woman he loves. His pursuit of revenge leads him to William Stryker and the Weapon X program, a military project that turns mutants into living weapons, and to an experimental procedure that gives him an unbreakable metal skeleton.
Gavin Hood directed the film, his third feature after Tsotsi (2005) and Rendition (2007) and the first of his three films released between 2009 and 2015 to follow. David Benioff and Skip Woods wrote the screenplay; Ralph Winter, Hugh Jackman and Lauren Shuler Donner produced. Jackman leads as Logan, with Liev Schreiber as Creed, Danny Huston as Stryker, Lynn Collins as Kayla Silverfox, Kevin Durand as Fred Dukes and Dominic Monaghan as Bradley. Roughly 63 cast members and 170 crew are credited.
Made for about 150 million USD, the film took around 373 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from about 566,000 votes and on TMDB 6.3/10 from some 11,500 votes; a critics' rating of 5.4/10 across 255 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- "Wolverine" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) were the first films produced by Hugh Jackman and John Palermo's new company, "Seed Productions."
- Zack Snyder and Bryan Singer turned down offers to direct the film. Snyder was too busy developing "Watchmen" (2009). Singer was willing to make the film, but only with an "R" rating. However, Hugh Jackman and Lauren Shuler Donner insisted on a "PG-13" rating.
- Len Wiseman expressed interest in directing the film at one time.
- Len Wein and John Romita Sr. created Wolverine in the 1970s; Chris Claremont and John Byrne devised Sabretooth in the 1980s; Deadpool appeared on the pages of comics in the 1990s thanks to Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld; Larry Hama created John Wraith in the 1990s.
- Liev Schreiber received the role after his friend, Hugh Jackman, asked him if he wanted to star in the film. Initially, Liev was supposed to play Stryker.
- Sabretooth, Wolverine, and Deadpool first appeared not in the pages of "X-Men" comics. Sabretooth's first appearance was in "Iron Fist" #14, and Wolverine's – in "The Incredible Hulk" #181.
- On April 1st, a working version of the film was stolen by pirates.
- Well-known poker player Daniel Negreanu was sitting at the poker table with Gambit.
- The role of Gambit could have been played by actor Channing Tatum, but he failed to coordinate his work schedule, and the role went to Taylor Kitsch.
- Gerard Butler and Karl Urban were considered for the role of Viktor Creed.
- Michael C. Hall was considered for the role of William Stryker.
- “Wolverine” was the first X-Men film to feature Gambit. In the comics, Gambit has completely black eyes with red pupils, but in the film they are green and only turn red when he uses his superpowers.
- Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Wesley Snipes (Blade) are the only actors who played characters from the Marvel universe in adaptations without auditioning for the role.
- Wolverine was created by writer Len Wein in 1974 in The Incredible Hulk #180 comic. The film is based on several storylines, such as Weapon X and Origin.
- For his role, Liev Schreiber gained 18 kilograms of muscle.
- When an elderly couple sees Logan for the first time, a quote from the novel 'The Lord of the Rings' can be seen on the rear window of their car – 'Not all those who wander are lost'.
- Concurrently with the film, a computer game with the same name was released, including slightly reworked and expanded 3D scenes from the film, as well as other (new) plot details. In particular, it tells the story of the Sentinels' creation by scientist Trask and a future in which mutants were nearly exterminated by the Sentinels. A young Mystique appears in the game.
- In some versions of the film, after the end credits, there is a scene where Deadpool, previously thought to be dead, tries to pick up his head amidst the wreckage of the final battle.
- Although this film is a prequel to the 'X-Men' film, Sabertooth looks and behaves completely differently.
- Some facts contradict the events of the earlier films. For example, in the second film, it becomes clear that Logan's amnesia is a result of the adamantium injection itself, and not subsequent events.
- Michelle Monaghan turned down the role of Kayla Silverfox because she was unable to coordinate her schedule.
- At the 9-minute mark of the film, a rat is sitting on Viktor's left hand. When the shot changes and Stryker crosses the camera threshold, it disappears.
- At the 12-minute mark of the film, Zero removes the magazines from his pistols while running, but in the next shot, the dropped magazines disappear. Also, when Zero tosses the pistols into the air, it can be seen that the weapons are on slide lock. However, in the next scene, he inserts new magazines into the pistols mid-air, and the slides are already forward.
- At the 12-minute mark of the film, Zero jumps over a fence and kills two sentries on guard towers while in mid-air. In the next scene, as he lands, the bodies of three killed people fall beside him, appearing significantly closer than they were previously.
- At the 13-minute mark, the tank gunner looks out through the sight while Fred peers inside through the muzzle of the main gun. The gunner notices Fred and opens fire, but this is actually impossible: the tank's sight and the gun barrel are not directly connected; furthermore, there is a shell in the gun blocking the direct line of sight, and the breech closes after loading. Also, when Fred plugs the muzzle with his hand to stop the exiting shell, it can be seen that Kevin Durand is replaced by a stunt double in one of the shots.
- At the 13-minute mark, Stryker's team gets stuck in an elevator on the 4th floor. When Bradley turns the power back on and the elevator resumes movement, in one of the shots, the team passes the 4th floor again.
- At the 15-minute mark of the film, when a kneeling village woman turns toward the soldiers, a working smoke machine can be seen in the bushes behind her.
- At the 26-minute mark of the film, Logan gets into the car holding gloves in his left hand. In the next shot, as he slams the door shut, the gloves disappear.
- At the 24-minute mark of the film, Stryker and Zero drive through mud to the sawmill where Logan works. At the 26-minute mark, when Logan drives away in his car after the conversation, the dirt road at the exit is completely dry.
- At the 34th minute of the film, when Logan enters the bar and speaks with Victor, his position changes between shots: Logan is first by the entrance door, then suddenly appears in the middle of the room.
- Stryker's laboratory shown at the 41st minute of the film, where adamantium is being pumped into Logan's body, differs from the one shown at the 93rd minute of the film 'X2: X-Men United'.
- At the 45th minute of the film, Logan climbs out of the tub after the adamantium infusion, yet he dries completely within a few seconds. Additionally, during the escape, when Wolverine cuts a metal wall crosswise with his claws, several fragments of metal in the middle of the cut remain suspended in the air.
- At the 48th minute of the film, Logan slices a sink in half out of fright. Due to two claw slashes, the sink splits into three fragments, although Wolverine has three claws, which should have resulted in four fragments. Furthermore, at the 49th minute, when Logan brings a piece of the sink into the kitchen, it can be noticed that the fragment differs significantly in size from the one Logan cut in the previous scene.
- At the 53rd minute of the film, while Logan is fleeing from a helicopter on a motorcycle, the door gunner begins firing at him with a Gatling gun. The booming sounds of the shots and their low frequency are clearly inappropriate for a high-rate-of-fire machine gun.
- At the 54th minute of the film, Logan knocks a soldier firing at him out of a Humvee's machine gun turret. In the next shot, the soldier falls and rolls along the road in the opposite direction of the vehicle's movement.
- During the helicopter chase that begins at the 52nd minute of the film, the number of missiles in the helicopter's pods changes between scenes.
- At the 55th minute of the film, when Logan jumps toward the helicopter, the main rotor can be seen spinning counter-clockwise. In the next shot, as Wolverine slices through the blades with his claws, the rotor is noticeably spinning in the opposite direction.
- At the 55th minute of the film, when the helicopter crashes, it can be seen that the tail detaches from the fuselage exactly along the seam, while the fuselage side shows clear damage to the plating and structural frame. It is also evident that the helicopter debris resting on the ground differs between shots.
- At the 63rd minute of the film, when Logan hits Fred in the head while jumping, a large poster can be seen hanging on the wall behind him. In the next scene, the heavy-set man is already falling in a different direction, and the poster is now opposite him. Additionally, in one shot, Fred's head gets stuck between the 3rd and 4th ropes, although in adjacent shots, he crushes all the ropes beneath him.
- At the 69th minute of the film, Victor punches through John's chest and breaks his spine. When Victor sits over his body to take a blood sample in a subsequent scene, there is not a single drop of blood on John's chest, and his shirt is completely intact.
- At the 70th minute of the film, Remy throws a deck of cards at Logan, sending him flying through a wall and out onto the street. When Remy exits to the street through the breach in the wall in a later scene, it can be noticed that the hole has become smaller.
- At the 77th minute of the film, Logan jumps from a plane into the water to sneak into Stryker's laboratory. When Wolverine breaks open the doors and enters in a following scene, he is already completely dry.
- At the 90th minute of the film, Logan is standing with his left hand facing the center of the cooling tower. When the shot changes and Deadpool jumps over Logan and Victor, who are standing back-to-back, the cooling tower is suddenly on the right.
- At the 91st minute of the film, Deadpool burns Victor with his lasers, yet in the following scenes, there is no trace of damage on Victor's clothing.
- At the 92nd minute of the film, Logan slashes Deadpool's neck while jumping, after which Deadpool falls to his knees and clutches his throat. When Logan kicks Deadpool down in the next shot, he is no longer holding his neck.
- At the 94th minute of the film, Remy saves Logan from a falling fragment of a cooling tower by destroying it in mid-air; however, in the next shot, there isn't a single piece of debris near Wolverine.
- At the 95th minute of the film, when Logan picks Kayla up in his arms, she holds onto him with both hands. After the cut, she is holding onto Wolverine with only her left hand.
- At the 98th minute of the film, as Logan gets up from the ground, the position of the bullet holes on his forehead changes between shots.
- At the 99th minute of the film, Logan examines Kayla's body, which is lying with her mouth slightly open. When he checks the pulse of his dead beloved, it can be noticed that she is breathing. Additionally, when Logan closes her eyes, her lips are already closed.
