El río que nos lleva

In the years after the Second World War, a young Irishman named Roy Shannon arrives in Spain with his faith in people worn away by the conflict he has lived through. He meets Paula, who brings him to a camp of gancheros, the men who float felled logs down the Tagus river. Led by a figure known as El Americano, they are rough, brave and generous, and Roy joins them as they drive the timber downstream.

The film is a Spanish adventure drama directed by Antonio del Real, who also produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Antonio Larreta and José Luis Sampedro. Alfredo Landa plays El Americano, with Tony Peck as Roy Shannon and Eulalia Ramón as Paula. Santiago Ramos, Mario Pardo and Fernando Fernán Gómez appear among a credited cast of twenty-eight. Released in September 1988 and running 116 minutes, it belongs to the earlier stretch of del Real's filmography as a director.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from 136 votes, a modest but positive score suggesting a small, settled audience rather than a wide one.
