Rogue Trader tells the true story of Nick Leeson, a young British man from modest beginnings who joins the respected Barings Bank and is posted to Singapore to work on the Asian futures market. Ambitious and quick to profit, he is put in charge of both the trading desk and its back-office accounting, an arrangement that lets him conceal his mounting losses. As his bets go wrong, he hides the damage rather than admit it, and the deception grows until it threatens the bank itself.
James Dearden directed and wrote the screenplay, his second feature after A Kiss Before Dying in 1991. Ewan McGregor plays Leeson, with Anna Friel as his wife Lisa, alongside Nigel Lindsay, Tim McInnerny, Irene Ng and Lee Ross among a credited cast of 38. The film was made for about 13 million dollars and shot in the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
The film was released in June 1999, dramatising events that had unfolded only a few years earlier. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 138 votes, while the critics' score stands at 4.9 out of 10 from 23 reviews, so audiences have rated it somewhat more favourably than reviewers did.
