Set in British India in 1856, this adventure film centres on Captain Jeffrey Claybourne, a British officer who defies his commanding officer's orders during a campaign against rebel forces. Although the action succeeds, Claybourne is punished for insubordination and barred from military service. Feeling he has disgraced himself in the eyes of Vivian Morrow, the daughter of his superior, he leaves the army. He is drawn back into the conflict when unrest spreads among the Indian troops and the Rajah Karam moves against British forces, giving Claybourne a chance to restore his standing.
Rock Hudson plays Claybourne, with Arlene Dahl as Vivian, Ursula Thiess as Latah, Torin Thatcher as Colonel Morrow, Arnold Moss as Rajah Karam and Dan O'Herlihy as Captain Ronald Blaine. The film was directed by László Benedek, whose previous feature was The Wild One the year before, from a screenplay by Richard Alan Simmons, and was produced by Ted Richmond for Universal International Pictures.
Running 87 minutes, the film mixes adventure, history and war. Audiences have been modest in their assessment: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from 586 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.2 from 12 votes, indicating a limited and not especially enthusiastic response.
