Short description

Three criminals leave Los Angeles after a drug deal turns bloody, driving toward Houston to sell what they have taken. When they decide to detour through a small Arkansas town to lie low, two Los Angeles detectives who have been tracking them call ahead to the local sheriff, Dale "Hurricane" Dixon. Dixon, eager to prove himself, sees the manhunt as his chance. What the fugitives do not count on is how determined the local lawman will be.

Carl Franklin directed from a screenplay by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and the film was the first he directed. Bill Paxton plays Dixon, with Cynda Williams as Fantasia, Billy Bob Thornton as Ray Malcolm and Michael Beach as Pluto; Jim Metzler and Earl Billings appear as the pursuing detectives.

Made for about 3 million dollars, the film returned roughly 2 million at the box office, so it drew modest audiences on its release. Its reputation rests instead on strong notices: critics rated it 8.5 out of 10 across 58 reviews, well above the audience scores of 7.1 on IMDb from 16,000 votes and 6.7 on TMDB.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was originally planned for a direct-to-video release, but the distributor, I.R.S. Records, decided to release it in theaters, where it ultimately flopped.
  • Sinda Williams landed the role of Lila Walker through deception, telling director Carl Franklin that she wanted to interview him and managing to secure a lunch date at a restaurant. Once at the table, she began acting out one of the scenes—which also took place in a restaurant—even shouting and swearing as her character would. Franklin did not appreciate being tricked, but he gave the role to Williams nonetheless.
  • The poster depicts a scene that does not appear in the film: a man on a highway shooting a police officer. In the movie, it was a woman who shot the officer, and it did not happen anywhere near the city in Arkansas, as the text on the poster suggested.
