The Amateur

Charles Heller is an administrative employee at the CIA who seeks revenge after terrorists kill his partner during an attack on the American consulate in Munich. After feeling unsupported by his government, Heller travels to the eastern bloc to hunt down those responsible. During his pursuit, he uncovers a conspiracy involving counter-espionage and deception that suggests his own agency may be linked to the crime.

Directed by Charles Jarrott, this Canadian production followed his work on Condorman earlier in 1981. The film stars John Savage as the lead character, supported by Christopher Plummer, Marthe Keller, Arthur Hill, Nicholas Campbell, and George Coe. The project was produced by Garth Drabinsky and Joel B. Michaels, with a screenplay written by Robert Littell and Diana Maddox.

The movie had a budget of 11 million USD but earned 7 million USD at the worldwide box office, meaning it did not recoup its production costs. Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.8/10 on IMDb based on 1,400 votes and a 5.4/10 on TMDB from 19 votes.
