Hostile Waters
Short description
Hostile Waters is a 1997 television drama about a Cold War confrontation at sea. In 1986, a Soviet nuclear submarine carrying sixteen warheads collides with an American vessel off the United States coast, leaving the Soviet boat damaged and a fire breaking out aboard. With a detonation threatening the eastern seaboard, the Soviet captain, Igor Britanov, faces difficult decisions about his crew and his ship while both navies struggle to keep the situation from escalating.
David Drury directed the film, from a screenplay by Troy Kennedy Martin; Tony Garnett and Wolf Bauer produced it. The cast includes Rutger Hauer as Captain Britanov, Martin Sheen as the American submarine's skipper, Max von Sydow as Admiral Chernavin, and Colm Feore and Rob Campbell in supporting roles.
Released in October 1997 as a co-production between HBO and the BBC with German and French partners, the film has a modest reputation on IMDb, where it holds a 6.3 rating from over 1,500 votes, and on TMDB, where it stands at 6.1 from fewer votes. Those numbers suggest a solid, narrowly seen television production rather than a widely discussed one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on real events that occurred with the Soviet atomic submarine K-219 in 1986, on the eve of the first meeting between Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in Reykjavik.
- The actual commander of the K-219, Igor Britanov, opposed this film and filed a lawsuit, stating that he had not authorized the use of facts from his biography in the film. As a result, in August 2004, Britanov won the case and received a penalty from the film studio, the amount of which was not disclosed to the public.
