The Perfect Storm
Short description
In October 1991, a fishing boat leaves Gloucester, Massachusetts, for the North Atlantic. Its captain, Billy Tyne, has had a run of poor catches, and he takes the Andrea Gail beyond the usual New England grounds to the Flemish Cap, where the swordfish are plentiful. The crew includes Bobby Shatford, whose girlfriend Chris waits ashore, and the men are determined to bring home a haul worth the risk. A storm is building behind them, formed when a hurricane and two other weather systems meet, and the boat is caught in it.
Wolfgang Petersen directed the film, his ninth feature, following Air Force One and preceding Troy. William D. Wittliff wrote the screenplay, and Petersen produced with Paula Weinstein and Gail Katz. George Clooney plays Billy Tyne, with Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C. Reilly, William Fichtner and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio among the cast.
Released in June 2000, the film cost about 130 million dollars and took roughly 329 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 from around 188,000 votes and on TMDB 6.5 from 2,663 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.4 from 137 reviews, close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- A vessel named "Lady Grace", a practically exact replica of the "Andrea Gail", was used for filming. After filming was completed, "Lady Grace" was purchased by one of the Boston restaurants, Legal Sea Foods, and the ship now stands at a dock in Gloucester, becoming a floating memorial to fishermen who lost their lives at sea.
- Filming took place on the edge of Hurricane Floyd for three days in order to capture footage of the storm's early stages.
- The role of Bobby Shaftoe was originally intended for Nicolas Cage, but the actor was forced to decline participation due to commitments to other projects.
- “Andrea Gali” was built by Eastern Marina Inc. in Panama City, Florida, in 1978. The original name of the 22-meter vessel was “Miss Penny.”
- Billy Tyne's and Dale Murphy’s relatives were very unhappy with the film, accusing the studio of using their names without permission and altering many facts to be inaccurate. The legal proceedings lasted five years, but the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed.
- The film that the “Andrea Gali” crew watches immediately before the confrontation between Bobby and Billy is Clint Eastwood’s western “Pale Rider” (1985).
- Filming took place from July 26 to December 23, 1999.
- Although the "Crow's Nest" bar does exist in Gloucester, it is not actually located in the docks as depicted in the film.
