In 1962, in the coastal town of Rockport, Maine, harbor master Harry Whitney rescues an orphaned seal pup and brings it home to his family. His youngest daughter, Toni, forms a close bond with the animal, named Andre, and the seal becomes a local attraction. Not everyone welcomes the newcomer: Billy Baker, a fisherman, blames the seals for his poor catches and directs his resentment at Harry and Andre. The family's efforts to care for the seal and the tensions with Billy eventually come to a head at sea.
The film is directed by George T. Miller, whose earlier work includes The Man from Snowy River, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter and Gross Misconduct; Andre followed those and preceded Robinson Crusoe and Zeus & Roxanne. Dana Baratta wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Keith Carradine as Harry, Tina Majorino as Toni, Keith Szarabajka as Billy, Chelsea Field and Aidan Pendleton as Harry's wife and elder daughter, and Joshua Jackson as Billy's son. Twenty-three performers are credited.
Released in August 1994, the film runs 94 minutes and blends adventure, comedy, drama and family elements. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from around 7,700 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 from about 129 votes. It is based on a true story of the early 1960s.
