Short description
Set in 1949, the film follows John Grady Cole, a young Texan whose life on the family ranch ends when his mother sells the property. He and his closest friend, Lacey Rawlins, cross into Mexico hoping to find work with horses and a way of life that is disappearing at home. On the journey they meet a runaway boy, Jimmy Blevins, whose presence brings trouble. The two friends find employment at a large ranch, and John Grady becomes involved with Alejandra, the daughter of the wealthy rancher who owns it. The relationship is forbidden, and the consequences place John Grady, Alejandra and Rawlins in serious danger.
Billy Bob Thornton directed the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel from a screenplay by Ted Tally, following his debut feature Sling Blade in 1996. Matt Damon plays John Grady, with Henry Thomas as Rawlins, Lucas Black as Blevins, Penélope Cruz as Alejandra, Rubén Blades as Rocha and Robert Patrick as Cole. The film was a large production, made for about 57 million US dollars, and its worldwide gross of roughly 18 million dollars was far below that outlay.
Reception was modest on all sides, with little distance between them: a critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 100 reviews, an IMDb score of 5.8 from around 16,000 votes, and a TMDB rating of 5.7 from roughly 248 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- After all the scenes with Billy Bob Thornton had been filmed, over an hour of footage was cut from the film at the insistence of producer Harvey Weinstein.
- Jesse Plemons was cast as the protagonist in his youth, but all scenes featuring him were cut from the film, and Plemons himself was unaware of this until he attended a screening with family and friends.
