Yun-ju, a part-time university lecturer without a permanent post, lives in a crowded apartment complex with his pregnant partner, who is the household's main earner. He is trying to raise money to bribe the dean into giving him a professorship, and the pressure of his stalled career wears on him. When a dog somewhere in the building will not stop barking, his frustration turns into a drastic act: he takes the animal and shuts it away. A young woman, Hyeon-nam, begins looking into the disappearances of dogs in the area.
The film is Bong Joon-ho's feature debut, from 2000, and the first entry in a directing career that continued with Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother, Snowpiercer, Okja, Parasite, Mickey 17 and Incoherence. Bong wrote the screenplay with Son Tae-woong and Song Ji-ho, and Cho Min-hwan produced. Lee Sung-jae plays Yun-ju, Bae Doona plays Hyeon-nam, and the cast includes Kim Ho-jung, Byun Hee-bong, Koh Soo-hee and Kim Roi-ha. It runs 110 minutes and mixes comedy, crime and drama.
Released in February 2000 in Korea, the film holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and a 6.8 on TMDB from roughly 320 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 17 reviews places it above both audience scores.
