Short description
Reindeer Games is a crime thriller about Rudy Duncan, a former car thief finishing a prison sentence. His cellmate Nick had been writing to a woman named Ashley and planned to meet her on release, but Nick dies before that happens. Rudy takes his place and begins a relationship with Ashley, only to find that her brother Gabriel has plans of his own: Gabriel and his crew want Rudy's knowledge of a casino they intend to rob, and Rudy is drawn back into a criminal world he hoped to leave behind.
John Frankenheimer directed the film, the sixteenth of the eighteen features he made, arriving between Ronin and Ambush. Ehren Kruger wrote the screenplay, and Bob Weinstein, Chris Moore and Marty Katz produced it for Dimension Films. Ben Affleck plays Rudy, with Charlize Theron as Ashley and Gary Sinise as Gabriel, alongside Dennis Farina, Clarence Williams III and Danny Trejo. The production cost about 42 million dollars and took in roughly 32 million worldwide, a shortfall against its budget.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from about 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from 752 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 from 91 reviews places it below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- While filming the scene where Dan Stablerfield's character hits Ben Affleck's character with a knife, the actor managed to knock Affleck off his feet. He fell, hit his head, and suffered a concussion. Filming had to be stopped to give Ben time to recover from the injury.
- Filming took place in Canada from March 15 to June 25, 1999.
