Liberty Stands Still

Liberty Wallace is the wife of Victor Wallace, who runs a major gun manufacturing company, and she works there too, handling marketing for the family business. Her life changes when a man named Joe takes her hostage, chaining her to a hot dog cart rigged with explosives in a public park. Joe is a father bent on payback: his daughter was killed by a gun that came from the Wallaces' company. Holding her in the sights of a rifle from a building across the park, he communicates with her by phone and lays out demands. What begins as a standoff turns into a prolonged conversation about guns, the arms trade, and who bears responsibility for the deaths they cause.

Kari Skogland directed and wrote the film, the third feature in her directing career after Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return and Zebra Lounge. Linda Fiorentino plays Liberty, Wesley Snipes plays Joe, and Oliver Platt plays her husband. The credited cast numbers 38, with 42 credited crew. Made for around 11 million dollars and released in early 2002, it runs 96 minutes and combines action, drama and thriller elements.

The response from audiences has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from 8,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from 168 votes. A smaller group of critics rated it lower still, at 4.3 out of 10 across five reviews.
