The Glass House
Short description
Ruby and Rhett Baker are teenagers whose comfortable lives are upended when their parents die in a car crash. Family friends Erin and Terry Glass take the siblings in and bring them to a striking glass-and-steel house in Malibu, where the couple seem generous and attentive. Ruby gradually comes to doubt their motives, suspecting that her new guardians want the inheritance meant for her and her brother, and that the household is not the safe refuge it appears to be.
Daniel Sackheim directed the film, working from a screenplay by Wesley Strick; Neal H. Moritz produced it for Columbia Pictures and Original Film. It was Sackheim's first feature after a long career in television, and it was released in September 2001. Leelee Sobieski plays Ruby, Diane Lane and Stellan Skarsgård play Erin and Terry Glass, and Trevor Morgan plays Rhett. Chris Noth and Bruce Dern appear in supporting roles.
The production had a budget of about 30 million dollars and took in roughly 24 million worldwide, a modest return. Audiences are divided: on IMDb the rating is 5.8 from about 43,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 6 out of 10 from around 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 from 86 reviews places it lower still than either audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The initial version of the film lasted almost three hours.
- According to the article Ruby is reading in one of the scenes, the parents died on Mulholland Drive, which is a reference to the film of the same name by David Lynch.
- According to the tombstones in the cemetery shown in the final scene, Ruby and Rhett's parents died on March 15, 2000.
- In October 2006, a sequel titled 'Glass House: The Good Mother' was released on DVD. It featured a different cast and, aside from the general premise, had practically nothing in common with the original film.
