Set in the early 1900s, Amy follows a woman who leaves her wealthy husband and a failed marriage after the death of her deaf son. She moves from Boston to a rural area in the Appalachian mountains to start over, where she finds employment as a teacher at a school for blind and deaf children. Despite lacking formal training, she focuses on helping her students communicate and forms a close bond with a boy who shows great potential. Her efforts are hindered by a lack of resources and the prejudices of the local community, while her husband continues to pursue her.
The film was produced by Walt Disney Productions and directed by Vincent McEveety. Within the director's chronological filmography, it follows six previous works, including Herbie Goes Bananas and The Watcher in the Woods.
