Troop Beverly Hills

Troop Beverly Hills follows Phyllis Nefler, a wealthy Beverly Hills housewife whose marriage is falling apart. Wanting to prove to her husband Freddy that she is more than the frivolous socialite he takes her for, she takes charge of her daughter's Wilderness Girls troop. The job brings her into conflict with Velda Plendor, the leader of a rival, highly decorated troop, and Phyllis initially seems out of her depth in the outdoors. The film is a family comedy directed by Jeff Kanew, whose earlier features include Eddie Macon's Run, Revenge of the Nerds and Gotcha!; it was his fourth film as director. Shelley Long plays Phyllis, with Craig T. Nelson as Freddy, Betty Thomas as Velda, and Mary Gross, Carla Gugino and Kellie Martin among the large credited cast. It was written by Margaret Oberman and Pamela Norris and produced by Ava Ostern Fries.

The film was released in March 1989 and had a mixed commercial run, earning about 9 million dollars worldwide against a production budget of 18 million. Audiences have since been kinder than critics: on IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from 187 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.2 out of 10 from 28 reviews.
