Short description
Terry Brogan is a former professional football player in Los Angeles whose career has ended and whose money has run out. An offer from Jake Wise, a nightclub owner of dubious reputation, seems like a solution: Terry is to travel to Mexico and track down Jessie Wyler, Jake's girlfriend, who has disappeared. He finds her on Cozumel and the two become involved, which puts Terry in conflict with the man who hired him. Jake sends one of his men after them, and the situation grows more dangerous when Jessie returns to Los Angeles on her own, leaving Terry to work out what drove her back.
The film is a loose remake of the 1947 noir Out of the Past and was directed by Taylor Hackford, its third entry in the chronological list of his features after The Idolmaker and An Officer and a Gentleman. Jeff Bridges plays Terry, Rachel Ward plays Jessie, and James Woods plays Jake Wise, with Alex Karras, Jane Greer and Richard Widmark in supporting roles. Daniel Mainwaring and Eric Hughes wrote the screenplay, and Hackford produced with William S. Gilmore.
Against All Odds was released in March 1984 and runs 121 minutes. Made for 13 million dollars, it took in about 22 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from roughly 15,000 votes and on TMDB 5.7/10 from 252 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.2/10 from 14 reviews, so critics rated it a little above the general audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jane Greer (1924-2001), who played the mother in this film, played Kitty in Jacques Tourneur's (1904-1977) film noir "Out of the Past" (1947), which this film is a remake of. The daughter in the remake is named Jessie and is played by Rachel Ward. Paul Valentine played the advisor in the remake, while in the 1947 film he played Joe Stefanos.
- Taylor Hackford wanted to cast Jeff Bridges in the 1982 drama 'An Officer and a Gentleman,' but the actor was busy filming three major projects at the time and didn't have the availability. Envisioning the character of Terry for this film, the director had always believed Bridges would play him.
- It is claimed that the black Ferrari and red Porsche in the chase scene were specially modified in California for high-speed racing and equipped with tripod mounts for the camera.
- Jeff Bridges' image and appearance were subsequently used in creating the 35-year-old Clu in Joseph Kosinski's superhero film "Tron: Legacy" (2010). When Bridges starred in "Against All Odds" (Taylor Hackford, 1984), he was around 34 years old.
- The picturesque locations chosen for filming in Yucatan and Mexico included Cozumel Island, a fishing village on a beautiful island near the resort town of Cancun, ancient ruins on the Caribbean coast, and the famous ruins of the city of Chichen Itza in the jungle. It was the first feature film to receive permission from the Mexican government to film in the ruins.
- Jeff Bridges was in good physical shape, however, his size and build were not what is required of a professional American football player.
