Ride with the Devil
Short description
Ride with the Devil takes place during the American Civil War along the contested border between Kansas and Missouri, where Union forces and Confederate sympathizers fight beyond the main battle lines. Childhood friends Jake Roedel, the son of a German immigrant, and Jack Bull Chiles join a band of guerrilla fighters rather than the regular army. Their group raids Union soldiers and their supporters while hiding in the woods, and the two young men are shaped by the violence and hardship of a conflict that does not spare civilians. A young widow, Sue Lee Shelley, offers moments of respite, but the realities of the fighting force the group and its members to confront what courage and honor can mean in a place with few rules.
Ang Lee directed the film, his sixth of fourteen, following The Ice Storm and preceding Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. James Schamus wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Robert F. Colesberry and Ted Hope, with Universal Pictures and Good Machine behind the production. The cast includes Tobey Maguire as Jake, Skeet Ulrich as Jack Bull, Jewel as Sue Lee, Jeffrey Wright as Daniel Holt, Simon Baker as George Clyde and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Pitt Mackeson, among a credited cast of 67 and crew of 72.
Made for about 35 million dollars, the film drew modest attention at the box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 217 votes, indicating a limited but mixed response from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Scenes set in Lawrence, Kansas, were actually filmed in Pattonsburg, Missouri. The town was flooded in 1993, and its population abandoned it.
- According to Jewel Kilcher, director Ang Lee cast her as Sue largely because of her crooked front teeth. The director felt that this is exactly what the teeth of a woman living in poverty in the 1860s should look like.
