Unfaithful

Edward and Connie Sumner live comfortably in a New York suburb with their young son, their dog and a housekeeper, their marriage settled into an affectionate routine. That changes when Connie meets Paul Martel, a young French book dealer, during a trip into Manhattan. What begins as a chance encounter turns into an affair that she keeps hidden from her husband, and the secrecy gradually unsettles the household. When Edward learns that his wife is hiding something, he starts looking into her movements, and the strain of what he finds pushes him toward a confrontation whose consequences reach beyond the couple.

Adrian Lyne directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by William Broyles Jr. and Alvin Sargent. It followed Lolita in his filmography and came after a run of earlier films including Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. Diane Lane plays Connie, Richard Gere plays Edward and Olivier Martinez plays Paul; Erik Per Sullivan appears as their son Charlie. The production, mounted by 20th Century Fox, Regency Enterprises, Fox 2000 Pictures and Epsilon Motion Pictures, cost about 50 million dollars and returned roughly 119 million worldwide.

The film runs 124 minutes and blends drama, romance and thriller elements. It holds a rating of 6.7 on IMDb from about 107,000 votes and the same 6.7 on TMDB from a much smaller base of roughly 1,800. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 165 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
