Dead Ringer

Edith Phillips runs a bar and lives on modest means, while her twin sister Margaret DeLorca has spent years in wealth after marrying the man Edith once loved. When the sisters meet again, the encounter reopens an old grievance. Edith kills Margaret and takes her place, passing herself off as the widow of a recently deceased husband.

Settling into her sister's life proves far harder than Edith expected. Margaret's household, her friends and the authorities all demand that the impersonation hold up, and the secrets Edith uncovers about the woman she has replaced make the position she has stolen more dangerous than the poverty she left behind.

Paul Henreid directed the film, his second feature behind the camera after Hollow Triumph in 1948, from a screenplay by Oscar Millard and Albert Beich, produced by William H. Wright for Warner Bros. Bette Davis plays both sisters opposite Karl Malden, Peter Lawford, Philip Carey, Jean Hagen and George Macready, among a credited cast of twenty-two. On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.8/10 from ten reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.9/10 from 115 votes, a close agreement between reviewers and the wider audience.
