The Outsiders
Short description
Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960s, The Outsiders follows two teenage gangs divided by class. The Greasers are working-class boys from the poorer side of town, while the Socs come from comfortable, well-off families. Tension between the groups runs high, and a confrontation late one night ends with one of the Socs dead. Two Greasers, Ponyboy and Johnny, go on the run, while the friends they leave behind face the consequences. The story is told largely through Ponyboy's eyes and centres on loyalty, loss and the bonds between the boys.
Francis Ford Coppola directed the film, working from a screenplay by Kathleen Rowell. It was his eighth film as director, coming between One from the Heart and Rumble Fish. The large young cast includes C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy, Ralph Macchio as Johnny, Matt Dillon as Dallas, Patrick Swayze as Darrel, Rob Lowe as Sodapop and Emilio Estevez as Two-Bit, with thirty-three credited performers in all. Produced by Gray Frederickson, Fred Roos and Coppola, the film had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took roughly 34 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response has been favourable: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 109,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from about 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 52 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- For Coppola, this low-budget and stylistically simple film was a respite after the resounding failure of the spectacular film “One from the Heart.” For the group of young actors that the master invited to the film, it became a successful start in the big screen.
- The film is based on S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders" (1967).

- The death of Matt Dillon's character closely resembles the death of his character in "Over the Edge" (1979).
