When Calls the Heart follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a cultured young woman from a wealthy family who leaves her comfortable city life to take a teaching post in a small coal-mining town in the West in 1910. Unprepared for the harsh frontier, she finds guidance in the diary of her aunt Elizabeth, who had once made a similar journey, and support from a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer as she adjusts to her new surroundings.
The film is a Canadian television movie directed by Michael Landon Jr., released in 2013. It sits between Love's Enduring Promise and The Ultimate Life in his filmography, which also includes Love Comes Softly. The cast is led by Poppy Drayton as Elizabeth, with Maggie Grace as her aunt, Stephen Amell as Wynn Delaney, Daniel Sharman as Edward Montclair, and Cherie Lunghi and Christopher Villiers as Elizabeth's parents. Thirty cast members are credited.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from 61 votes. The two scores are close, and the much larger vote count on IMDb gives that rating greater weight.
