A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson has spent two decades living in England, and when he returns to the United States he looks for a way to reconnect with the country he left behind. His solution is to walk the Appalachian Trail, the long route that runs from Georgia to Maine. He is joined by Stephen Katz, an old friend from his school days whom he has not seen in years, and the two men set out together despite having drifted in very different directions since they last knew each other.

The film is an adaptation of Bryson's memoir of the same name. Ken Kwapis directed it, placing it between Big Miracle and We Are The Shaggs in a career that also includes The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and He's Just Not That Into You. Robert Redford, who also produced, plays Bryson, with Nick Nolte as Katz, Emma Thompson as Bryson's wife Catherine, and supporting turns from Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal. It runs 104 minutes.

Made for a modest 8 million dollars, the film took in around 37 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. Audiences were divided: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 32,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 800 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 162 reviews places it below both audience scores.
