Our Town

Our Town is set in a small New Hampshire town in the early years of the twentieth century, where life follows its familiar course: children grow up, couples marry, and people live out their days in a community that changes only gradually. Milk and newspapers are delivered each morning, and doors go unlocked. The film follows the everyday lives of its residents, centering on young George Gibbs and Emily Webb as they move from childhood into adulthood and marriage, while their parents and neighbors carry on the routines of the town.

Sam Wood directed the film, which came after Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Gone with the Wind and before The Pride of the Yankees and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Thornton Wilder wrote the screenplay with Frank Craven and Harry Chandlee, adapting Wilder's own play. William Holden plays George and Martha Scott plays Emily, with Thomas Mitchell and Fay Bainter as the Gibbs parents and Guy Kibbee and Beulah Bondi as the Webbs. Sol Lesser produced for United Artists.
