House of Usher

Philip Winthrop travels to the gloomy Usher estate to see Madeline, the woman he intends to marry. Her brother Roderick opposes the union, believing a hereditary affliction has cursed the family for generations, and he takes increasingly extreme measures to keep the couple apart. Madeline suffers from a condition that leaves her cataleptic, and her brother's efforts to stop the wedding set in motion the downfall of the house itself. The story draws on Edgar Allan Poe's tale of the same name.

Roger Corman directed this 1960 American production, the fifth film in his directing career in chronological order, following The Little Shop of Horrors and preceding The Pit and the Pendulum. Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay, and Corman produced. Vincent Price plays Roderick, with Mark Damon as Philip, Myrna Fahey as Madeline, and Harry Ellerbe as Bristol. It runs 79 minutes.

The film took about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.1 from 51 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.7 from 380 votes, a narrow gap that suggests critics and viewers responded to it similarly.
