Short description

A surgeon named Génessier is responsible for a car crash that leaves his daughter Christiane severely disfigured. He tells the world she died and stages a funeral, but keeps her hidden at his property while he searches for a way to restore her face. With help from his assistant Louise, he abducts young women so that he can remove their facial tissue and graft it onto Christiane's. The operations fail repeatedly, forcing him to find new victims, and Christiane remains unaware of what her father is doing on her behalf.

Georges Franju directed the film, his second feature after the 1949 documentary short Blood of the Beasts. The screenplay was written by Pierre Boileau, Thomas Narcejac and Claude Sautet, and the cast includes Pierre Brasseur as Génessier, Alida Valli as Louise and Edith Scob as Christiane. Jules Borkon and Riccardo Gualino produced the Italian-French co-production.

The film runs 84 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 39,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 7.6 out of 10, from roughly 820 votes. A critics' rating of 8.8 out of 10 from 61 reviews places it higher with reviewers than with general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Georges Franju refused to call his work a horror film and considered it a story about mental anguish.
  • Director Georges Franju (1912-1987) refused until the end of his days to call his work a horror film and considered it, rather, a story about spiritual torment.
  • After the film's release in 1960, European censorship allowed it to be distributed in other countries, but scenes depicting plastic surgery and disfigured faces still drew criticism.
