Mozart and the Whale

Mozart and the Whale is a romantic drama about Donald, a taxi driver whose mind works in patterns and numbers. He has Asperger's syndrome, which makes social contact difficult and everyday life dependent on routines and rules. At a support group he leads for others on the autism spectrum, he meets Isabelle, an outgoing and impulsive woman who shares his condition but approaches the world very differently. Their mutual attraction grows into a relationship, yet the same traits that draw them together also threaten to pull them apart, and both must find a way to connect that neither finds easy.

The film was directed by Petter Næss, whose earlier features include the 1999 comedy Absolute Hangover and the 2001 film Elling; it came third among the features listed for him, before Into the White in 2012. Ronald Bass wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Boaz Davidson and James Acheson. Josh Hartnett plays Donald and Radha Mitchell plays Isabelle, with Gary Cole, Sheila Kelley, Erica Leerhsen and John Carroll Lynch among the supporting cast; thirty performers are credited in total. Produced by Millennium Media and Equity Pictures Medienfonds, it had a budget of 12 million USD.
