Paradise Alley
Short description
Paradise Alley is set in New York in 1946 and follows the three Carboni brothers, who live in the tough neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen and want out of their poverty. Cosmo, a small-time con artist full of schemes, decides that his strong but gentle brother Victor, an ice delivery man, should become a professional wrestler. The middle brother, Lenny, a cynical war veteran who works in a funeral home, joins the venture. Their plan takes them into a shabby arena where fixed matches draw gamblers, and the brothers use Cosmo's promotional instincts and Lenny's sharper tricks to work around a crooked manager, until a gangster named Stitch puts a dangerous wrestler in Victor's path.
The film was directed by Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote the screenplay and plays Cosmo, marking the first film he directed, ahead of Rocky II and the later Rocky and Rambo entries. Lee Canalito plays Victor, with Armand Assante as Lenny, and Anne Archer and Kevin Conway among the supporting cast.
Released in September 1978, the film ran 107 minutes and was made for about 6 million dollars, returning roughly 7 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 from around 6,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from five reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Sylvester Stallone wanted all the main characters to be African American. He only managed to secure funding for the film when he agreed to star in it himself and made all the main characters Italian American.
- As in the film «Rocky», Sylvester Stallone's own brother, Frank Stallone, played the singer.
- Sylvester Stallone wrote the film's screenplay even before he wrote the screenplay for the sports drama «Rocky» (1976), but this story did not attract any of the producers Stallone approached for a long time. Only after the resounding success of «Rocky» did producers agree to look at the screenplay, and the film company «Universal Pictures» gave the green light to filming.
- While working on this film, Sylvester Stallone was a novice director, so it happened several times that both the actors and the crew were ready to shoot a scene, but couldn't start because Stallone forgot to say "Action!"
- Initially, "Nighthawk" was significantly longer, but the film had to be cut at the insistence of the film company Universal Pictures. According to Stallone himself, he cut a total of 40 scenes, 10 of which were later returned to the film for television release.
