The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel follows the German field marshal Erwin Rommel through the Second World War, from his campaigns in North Africa to his later posting along the Atlantic coast. The film traces how a soldier who won the respect of both his own side and his enemies gradually turned against Adolf Hitler, and how that change of heart drew him into the conspiracy against the dictator.
Henry Hathaway directed this 1951 American production for 20th Century Fox. It was the fifth of the eighteen films he directed, coming between Kiss of Death and Rawhide. Nunnally Johnson wrote the screenplay and produced. James Mason plays Rommel, with Cedric Hardwicke as Karl Strolin, Jessica Tandy as Rommel's wife Lucie, Luther Adler as Hitler and Everett Sloane and Leo G. Carroll in supporting roles; forty-two performers are credited.
The film runs eighty-eight minutes and mixes action, drama, history and war. It has an IMDb rating of 6.9 from about 7,200 votes, a TMDB rating of 6.7 from 119 votes, and a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from six reviews. Audience and critical scores sit close together, suggesting a broadly similar reception on both sides.
