What's left behind the scenes
- A film adaptation of Suguro Yamamoto's novel.
- Matsuda's wife's blackened teeth are not a sign of irresponsible attitude towards her health, but rather a quite fashionable cosmetic procedure for that time.
- In response to Matsuda's wife's question about the name of their savior, the main character, looking at the blooming camellias, replies: “Tsubaki Sanjuro,” which can be translated as “30-year-old Camellia.”
- The total number of corpses in the film: 27. All killed by Sanjuro.
- In the scene where Sanjuro, having killed several Kikui, then slapped three young samurai, accusing them of forcing him to kill so many, Toshiro Mifune genuinely hit his partners, which, as can be seen in the film, greatly surprised them.
- For the "fountain of blood" in the final duel, chocolate syrup mixed with carbonated water was used and served under high pressure.
