Tokyo Mater is a short animated comedy in which Mater, the tow truck, makes a routine towing trip to Tokyo. There he is challenged to a drift race by a gang leader and his ninjas. With help from his friend Lightning McQueen and some special modifications, Mater tries to win the race and take the title of king of the drifters.
The film is directed by John Lasseter and Rob Gibbs, who also wrote the screenplay with Scott Morse. It sits between Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales and Cars 2 in Lasseter's directing credits, and it is the second of six directing credits listed for Gibbs. Larry the Cable Guy voices Mater, with Keith Ferguson as Lightning McQueen, Elissa Knight as Tia, and Guido Quaroni as Guido, alongside additional voice work by Lori Alan and Mickie McGowan. It was produced by Kori Rae, Mary Alice Drumm and Kimberly Adams for Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar, and runs six minutes.
Released on November 21, 2008, Tokyo Mater holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,666 votes, and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 159 votes. The two audience scores are close, indicating a similar, mildly positive response from viewers on both platforms.
