Short description

An actor on the skids is given one more chance to regain his stardom, as well as his self-respect, yet his alcoholism may prevent that from happening.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Grace Kelly (1929-1982) won the only Oscar of her career for her role in this film. She received 6 more votes than Judy Garland (1922-1969). A similar situation occurred in 1968, when Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) received an equal number of votes.
  • For the scene depicting intoxication, singer and actor Bing Crosby (1903-1977) instructed his son Dennis and brother Philip to keep him awake the night before filming so that he would look as bad as possible. As it happened, his mother arrived on set the next morning to watch the filming. Upon seeing her exhausted son, the woman silently stood up and left.
