The King's Daughter
Short description
King Louis XIV of France seeks a way to live forever and sets his sights on a mermaid, whose life force is said to grant immortality. When the creature is captured and brought to court, his illegitimate daughter Marie-Josephe discovers her and forms a bond with her, setting up a conflict between the king's ambitions and the daughter he barely knows.
The King's Daughter is a fantasy adventure directed by Sean McNamara, the eighteenth of the twenty-four films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Mighty Oak in 2020 and Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders in 2022. James Schamus and Barry Berman wrote the screenplay, and McNamara produced with Wei Han and David Brookwell. Pierce Brosnan plays Louis XIV, with Kaya Scodelario as Marie-Josephe, Benjamin Walker as Yves De La Croix, William Hurt as Pere La Chaise, Fan Bingbing as the mermaid and Julie Andrews as narrator. Twenty-two cast members and sixty-one crew members are credited.
The production had a budget of 41 million US dollars and returned 2 million dollars worldwide, a wide gap between cost and receipts. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 737 votes, indicating a modest but positive response from that audience. Released on 21 January 2022, it runs 94 minutes and was made across Australia, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, the United States and France.
What's left behind the scenes
- Some scenes were filmed at Versailles (the dance, for example, was shot in the Hall of Mirrors). They had to film at night when there were no tourists.
