• The film is based on a series of novels by Kan Shimozawa about a blind masseur, a master of kenjutsu and iaido named Zatoichi.
• The blood in the film looks unnaturally bright. The screenwriter, director, and lead actor Takeshi Kitano deliberately made it that way, so that the blood, according to him, would look like 'flowers blooming on the screen'.
• Daigoro Tatibana, who played the role of the geisha O-Sei, is an actor of the traditional Japanese theatrical onnagata, in which men play female roles.
• The Japanese tap dance ensemble The Stripes performs the dance number at the end of the film along with the actors.
