The Car
Short description
A small New Mexico town is stalked by a driverless black car that appears from nowhere and runs down its victims. After the vehicle kills the local sheriff, Captain Wade Parent takes charge of the investigation, but no one knows where the car came from, who is behind the wheel, or how to stop it. As the deaths mount, Parent comes to treat the machine as a personal enemy.
The film was directed by Elliot Silverstein, his third feature after Cat Ballou and A Man Called Horse, and written by Dennis Shryack, Michael Butler and Lane Slate. James Brolin plays Wade Parent, with Kathleen Lloyd, John Marley, R. G. Armstrong, John Rubinstein and Elizabeth Thompson among the cast of twenty-six credited players. Universal Pictures and Hollywood Road Films produced the ninety-six-minute release, which came out in May 1977 and mixes action, horror, mystery and fantasy.
On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 340 votes, figures that suggest a modest but persistent following. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from twenty reviews is markedly lower than those audience scores, indicating that reviewers at the time were far less receptive to the film than viewers have generally been.
What's left behind the scenes
- It took 10 months for 12 people to build four versions of the Car. The actual work took 8 weeks. The car used for stunts had to be equipped with numerous safety systems and mechanisms.
- The car was specially designed for this film by the renowned automotive designer George Barris (1925-2015), who repeatedly created cars for the American film industry, including the Batmobile for the 1966 film.
- Four cars were assembled for filming – one for close-up shots and three for stunts. During filming, two cars were destroyed, and one is now kept in a private collection.
- To give the Car a 'sinister' look, as the director requested, George Barris lowered its roof by 7.6 centimeters and raised and lengthened the fenders.
