Annabelle
Short description
Annabelle is a horror film about a young married couple, John and Mia Form, who are expecting their first child. John gives Mia a rare vintage doll dressed in a white wedding gown, a gift she has wanted for some time. Their happiness is short-lived: one night members of a satanic cult break into their home and attack them. The intruders survive the assault but leave behind something far more dangerous, a malevolent presence that attaches itself to the doll and to the family.
The film was directed by John R. Leonetti, his third feature and the third title in the sequence of films he has directed, following Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and The Butterfly Effect 2. Gary Dauberman wrote the screenplay, and James Wan and Peter Safran produced. Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton play Mia and John, with Tony Amendola, Alfre Woodard, Eric Ladin and Kerry O'Malley in supporting roles. It is a spin-off from The Conjuring, built around the doll that appears in that film.
Made for 7 million dollars, Annabelle took about 258 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it a considerable commercial success relative to its cost. Audience response was moderate: it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 195,000 votes, and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 6,700 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 134 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Unlike James Wan's film "The Conjuring" (2013), which is supposedly based on real events, this prequel tells a fictional story of the doll's previous owner before it was given to the two caretakers shown at the beginning of "The Conjuring." The only explanation for Annabelle's origin is given by a medium hired by the caretakers, who explained that Annabelle Higgins was a girl from the 1860s whose body was found in a field where a house was later built.
- Donna's mother gave her the real Annabelle doll in 1970, when she was still a college student. Donna and her roommate Angie noticed that the doll initially moved slightly, and then over several weeks became fully mobile, able to move from one room to another in their absence.
- The real Annabelle doll is a large Raggedy Ann doll. It can be seen at the Warren's Occult Museum.
