The Straw Hat Pirates set out for the desert kingdom of Alabasta, where a civil war is being stirred up from within. Princess Vivi, whose family rules the country, has learned that the criminal organization Baroque Works and its leader, Crocodile, are working to set the royal army and the rebels against each other so that power will fall into their hands. Luffy and his crew agree to help her reach her homeland and stop the fighting before the kingdom is torn apart.
Released in 2007, the film is a condensed retelling of the Alabasta storyline from the One Piece anime. It was directed by Takahiro Imamura, his second feature after the 2006 Fist of the North Star film, from a screenplay by Hirohiko Uesaka, and was animated by Toei Animation with Mayumi Tanaka, Kazuya Nakai, Akemi Okamura, Kappei Yamaguchi, Hiroaki Hirata and Ikue Otani voicing the crew. Twenty-eight credited cast members and sixty credited crew worked on the production.
The film took about 7 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure that reflects its status as a theatrical recap aimed mainly at existing fans rather than a stand-alone blockbuster. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from roughly 2,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller base of 174 votes, a sign of generally favorable but not enthusiastic viewer response.
