Dutch Dooley is a working-class man dating Natalie, a woman recently separated from her wealthy husband. When her teenage son Doyle refuses to leave his Atlanta prep school for Thanksgiving, Dutch offers to drive him home himself, hoping the trip will help them get to know each other. Doyle turns out to be spoiled, sharp-tongued and determined to make the journey as difficult as possible, and the long drive back becomes a series of clashes and misadventures rather than the easy bonding exercise Dutch had in mind.
The film was directed by Peter Faiman, following his 1986 comedy Crocodile Dundee. John Hughes wrote the screenplay and produced it with Richard Vane through Hughes Entertainment and 20th Century Fox. Ed O'Neill plays Dutch, with Ethan Embry as Doyle, JoBeth Williams as Natalie and Christopher McDonald as her ex-husband Reed. It runs 107 minutes.
Released in July 1991, the film cost about 17 million dollars and took in roughly 5 million worldwide, a poor return against its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.5 from a much smaller group of 231 votes, so audience opinion has settled into mild, unenthusiastic territory.
