The Lobster
Short description
In a near-future society where being single is against the law, unmarried people are arrested and sent to a hotel. There they are given forty-five days to find a partner. Those who fail are turned into animals and released into the woods. David arrives at the hotel after his wife leaves him, chooses a lobster as his animal should he fail, and struggles to meet the deadline. He eventually escapes into the woods, where a group of fugitives lives under a strict rule of its own: no couple is allowed.
The Lobster was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who wrote the screenplay with Efthymis Filippou. It followed Kinetta, Dogtooth and Alps in his filmography and came before The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite, Poor Things and later features. Colin Farrell plays David, with Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Léa Seydoux, Michael Smiley and Ariane Labed among the cast. The production involved companies in several countries and cost around four million dollars; it grossed about sixteen million worldwide.
The film is a comedy, drama and romance released in October 2015 and runs just under two hours. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from roughly 332,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7 from about 7,000 votes. Critics gave it 7.6 from 269 reviews, placing it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot almost entirely using natural lighting. Electric lighting was only used for filming some night scenes. The actors were not made up.
- Most of the film was shot in County Kerry, but city scenes were filmed in Dublin.
- Jason Clarke was initially considered for the lead role in the film, but he had to decline due to commitments to other projects.
- Many episodes of the film were shot inside and around the Parknasilla Hotel in the village of Sneem (County Kerry, Ireland).
- Scenes inside the hotel were mostly shot at the Eccles Hotel in the village of Glengarriff in County Cork. Many street scenes were filmed near the Parknasilla Hotel in the village of Sneem.
- Many mistakenly believe that "The Lobster" was the first film that director Yorgos Lanthimos shot in English. In fact, his first such film was a short film called "Necktie" lasting only ninety seconds, shot as part of the "Venezia 70: Future Reloaded" project.
- "Filmcasino" in Vienna, Austria, was the only cinema in a German-speaking country to screen "The Lobster," so there is neither a German-dubbed version of the film nor even a version with German subtitles.
- In the scene where David and his wife dance in the forest, they play “Where The Wild Roses Grow” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Kylie Minogue on their CD players.
